What is this going to cost?
Working out the cost of this is a lot of guess work. Because you're on your own it depends on how cunning, crafty and lucky you are. If you need to bribe a border guard to stop them using your car for target practice you might find that it costs more than if you marry the daughter of the President of Uzbekistan.
With some creative fundraising, this trip can cost you very little...
- Entry Fee for 2009: £250 paid to UK charity Go Help. This goes towards basic admin costs, the Naadam and our charity projects in Mongolia.
- Visas: variable, depending on the route you take and if you have to get express visas at the last minute. We have a complete guide to visas here .
- Fuel: depending on the route you take, you can be driving between 5000 and 10,000 miles. Fuel is cheaper than in the UK, but it varies greatly. In Mongolia it can be around 50p/litre.
- Repairs: these are cheaper, but it depends how many problems you have and how good you are at haggling with locals to do the repairs.
- Food: how much can you eat? Food is cheap, even if you are eating out.
- Accommodation: sleep in the car or camp and your costs are minimal. Stay in hotels and your costs will go up!
- Insurance: this shouldn't cost much, as you only need insurance for your car in Europe. For most other countries on the route you buy insurance at the border.
- Bribes: you can get away with no bribes over the whole route, or get fleeced at every border. A smile gets you a long way!
- Border admin: all sorts of extra charges appear at borders such as insurance, road tax etc.
- Return journey: £500 should be more than enough to get you back from UB by plane.
- Vehicle deposit. This isn't really a cost, as you'll get it back once your car is handed over at the finish, or if you show us that you have abandoned your vehicle before reaching Mongolia. Payment will be just before you leave the UK. Why is this necessary? We make all of the arrangements for your car to be imported into Mongolia tax free and we need to be sure that you will deliver your vehicle to the charity in Ulaanbaatar. If you sell your car in Mongolia and don't give it to the charity, we will use your deposit to retrieve the vehicle. If your car doesn't reach Mongolia, you'll get your deposit back. This deposit is only to ensure your car doesn't end up on the black market in Mongolia.
